Sadly, this may not be a troll. I remember book purist calling the original Trilogy a failure when the movies first came out.

I guess I wouldn't expect someone sincere to be so blunt. No beard = movie FAIL! That's just brainless.

I just found out that apparently Tolkien's estate/family does NOT like the LotR movies. It(and the Hobbit)'s movie rights were already sold, but there is no way they'd let The Silmarillion or any other of his books go now.

(fairly certain that's why Peter Jackson can't resist putting all the extra backstory stuff into The Hobbit that's resulting in it being three movies. He knows he'll never get another chance after this)

I thought it was just the son (Christopher, I think?) who hated them? Or is he it, as far as family goes?k--I'm not a Tolkien geek, so I'm probably talking out of my ass.

shit man, it could very well be. I don't know any further than "the family no gusta"

A couple of Tolkien's great-grandsons appeared in Air New Zealand's Hobbit themed safety briefing so they obviously approve - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBlRbrB_Gnc

As I recall, one of Tolkien's grandsons publicly supported the movies (which got him in trouble with Christopher Tolkien).

C. Tolkien is still the patriarch of the family so when people say "The Tolkien Estate" they probably just mean him.

Maybe it is just him, but he's the one holding the reigns on the family rights to the books.

That's pretty much it. If the Silmarillion ever happens, it'll be after C. Tolkien passes on.

Though, I think the Sil will be better suited to a Game of Thrones-style TV series than a movie.

I would hope however it stuck closely to the book - though I would be all for digging into details from The History of Middle-earth to flesh it out.

I like the Silm, it gave me a lot of my love of elves (particularly the stroppy bastard Fëanor) and in particular my love of Valar.
