My god...all this time I've been saying "new" Who assuming that "old" Who was like, the movie or something!

Yeah, New Who is what is actually relevant when it comes to how the Doctor is being characterized, because it is completely removed from almost all of the values, themes, ideas, and portrayals of old Who.
