ayrt

LOL, sorry, I didn't realize you meant in the new series, I haven't (and likely won't, unless it runs as a marathon and I've nothing better to do) seen that yet, I was talking about the Christmas Special, which I'm glad I skipped.

the Doctor's inexplicably fickle, black and white attitude towards his companions. He's both absurdly hung up on them and yet incredibly lackadaisical about their welfare and feelings.

Reflective of the poor quality of the writer(s) IMO.

I remember when his companions got into trouble because they defied him, not because they followed him.

SO MUCH THIS. And River doesn't count because, well, that whole thing was just incoherent from the get-go. Poorly planned out and, as a result, very poorly executed. (Literally.)

Nah, it can't just be poor writing -- it's too consistant across too many writers. It's more a concept failure (or if not a failure, a concept that really doesn't appeal to me).

It's like the Who people gaged what they thought their audience wanted and decided it was for the doctor to be more romantic, but not at all sexual, to have more show-boaty "look at me, I'm the doctor!" moments, and yet show off his tender hurty side. So out the door goes the subtle doctor who blends into his environment until the time is ripe and then shows his bad-ass colors. Now he walks in the door and says: "Everyone pay attention, it's me, the Doctor! I know what to do!" Similarly gone is the cranky doctor who gets grouchy at silly things, but has his heart in the right place when shit gets real. And gone is the fatherly Doctor who is sympathetic to his companions hurts, and the fool doctor who amuses others so they underestimate him.

In his place we have the doctor who sweeps women (and the occasional man) off her feet with the suaveness of Harlequin romance cover. He offers her the stars, then forgets she exists while battling some monster made out of snot, then gets annoyed when she does something on her own initiative, then morphs into emo-Doctor when she leaves him. He wangsts and winges for a while, then finds a new companion and goes back to "impress the hell out of her" mode.

Honestly, he's like the worst boyfriend ever.
