I really frigging hate this argument. For God's sake, it's not just the Hobbit. It's everything that happened in that time period. The Necromancer, The White Council. Everything Tolkien himself said happened during the time period when Bilbo etc are on their Quest. If anything is inflated, it's from Tolkien's own sources.

Thank you for this. I don't get how people don't know this. But then, not everyone knows there are auxiliary LOTR works beyond just The Hobbit, so. :V
