Used books/library/piracy/buying ??

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
So, due to the way above thread about literary piracy, I got all thinky.

I was feeling a little unhappy because I personally have never pirated a book, and for some totally non logical reason would feel far worse about that than music or movies (I guess because I feel like writers (that aren't huge names) are less likely to make a decent profit than movie people and musicians? Not that that really is true, probably.), but then I realized ... I have about five floor to ceiling bookshelves *full* to overflowing with books, and maybe ten of them I bought new. Everything else is secondhand.

Authors aren't making any money off secondhand books ... how am I actually any better than someone who pirates them? And lol, I'm totally *never* going to buy a new copy of something I bought secondhand, unlike something I had pirated. (Probably not very likely I'd buy it then, but it's more likely than if I have an actually hard copy in my hand!)

Just ... I don't really approve or disapprove of piracy, but I also don't really know how to come to any sort of conclusion about it regarding creator's profits when it comes to things like this. Also only have like five out of all my movies that are not secondhand, and maybe twelve or so out of my cds.

Urk.

...Dude, could you please not use words like "thinky?" Try "contemplative," "pensive," maybe even "introspective." Let's try and elevate ourselves above the Tumblr level of vocabulary.

Anyway, buying a book secondhand will at least give a profit to a secondhand bookstore, antiques store, or independent seller, and will ensure that books continue to circulate. Pirating a book won't give profits to anyone (other than the emotional profit to the pirate).

You're supporting a second-hand bookstore, so that it stays open and continues to provide low-priced books to people. If you use the library, you're helping to keep that open too.
