And yet people will pitch a fit if you spank a dog...

lol, really? I've never seen that. Then again, most people don't spank dogs. And I have WAY less of a problem with "spanking" a dog than with a child. Considering the way dogs function mentally, it even makes sense in the right situations.

The only time my mom ever hit my dog was shortly after we got her, when she tried to establish dominance over my little sister by snapping at her. Mom immediately started yelling, and she grabbed a newspaper, rolled it up, and swatted the dog's backside all the way out of the house and into the backyard. She has never before or since acted that way to my dog, who she adores (and who adores her - Mom's the "alpha" as far as she's concerned and her favorite person). In that instance, she just saw an alpha being an alpha, and she never snapped at my sister again. She got that Sister was also dominant over her in the pack order.

I've seen more people get up in arms about spanking a dog than I have ever seen get indignant about spanking a child. 'The dog doesn't understand' they say, 'you're just teaching him/her to fear you!' they say, not realizing or caring that the same could be applied to young children. I don't think people should hit their pets OR their kids, but the fact I've seen more people comfortable and willing to defend physically disciplining a child than a dog has always struck me as odd.

With pets I've found that startling them and a firm (not violent) hand works as well as anything. One instance of swatting a dog is not likely to turn it into a neurotic or aggressive mess (much like a child), the issue is that for a lot of people it doesn't stop at one swat.

I generally agree with this, yeah. Like I said above/elsewhere, it's probably a good course of action when it comes to something like a child doing something really dangerous and impulsive (running into traffic, etc.) and the case with my dog (she could have seriously hurt my sister).

the issue is that for a lot of people it doesn't stop at one swat.

This also. I don't think anyone on this thread is condoning outright abuse, though to me it's a fuzzy line between making a habit of spanking your kids/pets and abuse.

With my dog, my mom swatted her multiple times within about a minute, but not hard enough to actually injure her. She did make an impression, and she never snapped at my sister again. I also have to argue that she made the right decision because as much and as deeply as I love my dog and animals in general, the welfare of a child > the welfare of a pet.

And of course that incident only happened once, and was the only reason anyone in my family ever hit our dog, and she turned out just fine. She has a great temperament and adores my mom more than anyone.
