Oddly, this is very far from the first time I've heard of a blind tailor, though for the life of me I can't remember where I read about the others.

Pure speculation, but maybe it's because the tailors went blind after years of squinting at their sewing, and by that time they were good enough they didn't need to see?

I've heard about blind weavers more than blind tailors, and unfortunately mostly in terms of "children working in sweat-shop conditions eventually go blind from squinting over their work," but I don't know how common it actually is.
