This. The only times I was hit or manhandled as a kid didn't teach me anything but that I didn't have control over my own body. My dad would do things like pick me up and slam me against the kitchen counter when I wouldn't eat my dinner. It didn't matter that I wasn't a picky kid normally and only refused food if I felt sick, I was going to eat everything on my plate--and end up throwing it up later and be made to clean it up if I couldn't run for the bathroom fast enough. I wasn't hit or thrown around when I did stupid life threatening stuff. I was hit because I made my dad mad and he had to take it out on someone. My dad used violence when I was little because he didn't listen to reason, my mom hit me when I was in my teens and neither she nor I was capable of rationality when we fought. I'd personally rather than spanking wasn't legal, to help protect other kids who have to deal with similar crap, but I get that it's probably different for other kids whose parents didn't hit them because they were frustrated.

As much as I'm against corporal punishment, I do think insinuating that an occasional spank is comparable to blatant physical abuse is kind of...well...not a great idea.

I'm sorry you went through what you did. There aren't words for how awful and deplorable that is. =(
