I remember the neighborhood Kid Who's Parents Did Not Believe In Spanking.

He was a hellion. He was younger than me and my friend, but he still bullied us around, tried to ride my dog (way too big, and he was kicking at her), and at one point, grabbed a vine and tried to whip us with it (my friend had marks on his back from that), laughing the whole time.

He was awful.

I don't doubt that there were myriad reasons that he was like that. But still, he was the one in the neighborhood who didn't get spanked for doing wrong.

I can meet anecdata for anecdata.

I was "the neighborhood kid whose parents did not believe in spanking." I was a timid and introverted child who never got into trouble and was the victim of bullying at the hands of other neighborhood kids and schoolmates. I volunteered at the local pound in high school, and have always been kind to animals and hate seeing them abused or harmed.

If you think that my not-being-spanked is unrelated to my being a meek and well-behaved child, then your neighbor kid's not-being-spanked has nothing to do with his being a hellion.

Obviously your being meek and well-behaved precluded any need for spanking.

Well, to be fair, it was because the kid received no discipline of any kind. I'm just saying, that's what he was known as.

Well, there you go. The kid's problem wasn't a lack of spanking; it was a lack of any sort of discipline. As I hope everyone here realizes, you can discipline a child without using physical pain as a punishment.

...then it wasn't because he wasn't spanked. Spanking =/= all discipline.

ITA that there is a MAJOR issue there with lack of discipline. But pulling "spare the rod, spoil the child"-esque arguments in a situation like that before bringing up even a single other option for discipline is missing the point by MILES.

I think you kind of misrepresented what really happened, actually, in your first comment by leaving out that important piece of info. It kind of changes everything.

My parents Did Not Believe In Spanking. (In large part because they both come from incredibly physically and mentally abusive families and have residual anger issues. That's NOT a good combo for spanking, and they recognized it.)

My sister and I turned out fine. Frankly, the "You've disappointed me" lecture sure as hell did a lot more than I think spanking ever would have.

It sounds like the neighborhood kid didn't get discipline of any kind, which is... not the same as "not spanking."

+1

that is such a shitty feeling (and it should be)
