Running away in stores I can sort of get, since it's a safety issue, but there are also ways to restrain your kids that should be employed as much as possible for kids who like to run, especially ones who are too young to understand it's bad.

I don't see why spanking is necessary for a tantrum. All kids do that sometimes, some more than others. If you indulge the tantrum, it happens more. If you don't, if you completely wait it out and don't give them any of the attention they want, if you follow through on threats to go home and take away privileges...I've never heard of that not working, and it really puzzles me that spanking would be effective where other forms of negative reinforcement aren't for something like that. *shrug*
