Um in the books Drogo/Dany weren't rapey. Only in the comics. In the books, Dany consented fully.

Except that she's underage, which means it was rape regardless. Different and more nuanced in the books, but still rape.

I don't watch the series because it's rapey, but underage is a modern definition. She's old enough to conceive, she's more than old enough to marry or be married off(read have sex with the dude) in many societies.

Okay, but even if in the period it was okay, that doesn't mean it wasn't rape. And also, while she says yes, she clearly doesn't know that she can say know. So the whole thing is sketchy. Acceptable in the time period, certainly, but that doesn't mean a modern reader can't recognize it as rape.

visp, stop misspelling "say no"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Not Visp, and I didn't notice the typo.

Ah, I get it now. I was scrolling through that and I was like "Huh? Is that some sort of pun?" and then said "say no" out loud a few times, trying to figure out what the joke was.

But nope, wasn't me. Sorry, other anon, but it would just seem that there is more than one person out there that has typo'd 'no' as 'know' and also feels that consummating a forced marriage to a 13-year-old counts as rape.

... not sure why you'd think anyone would take all the time to log out and post that, really.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, you don't need to log out to post something as anonymous.

Underage...as far as our perspective is concerned.

The first time. And even then, since her abusive brother just told her that he'd beat the shit out of her if she didn't "please him" the 'yes' is still iffy (the implication that Drogo had made a point of at least being able to understand the word 'no' in her language before the wedding was a point for him, definitely)

After that, it's made clear that neither of them consider her further consent to be in any way relevant, and several times mentions her crying during sex and being relieved when he doesn't come to "visit." Also, she says that her opposition to slavery is mainly because her brother sold her to Drogo and she wouldn't wish that fate on anyone.

No.

WTF.

Statutory rape is still rape, and she clearly did not want it. She went along with it because she thought she had to. The fact that she ended up physically enjoying it halfway through does not mean that it wasn't rape.

That being said, there is not a lot of rape in the series in general.

Excluding her age which made me uncomfortable, it was a very, very consensual scene. No vaginas were harmed.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Er, I mean in the books.
