Stupid question time, but is there any way to learn how to cry quietly? Or are there any tricks for not crying/crying quietly?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the saddest question in the world. Why do you not want to be heard crying, bb?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, um, it's not bad! It's just, I went and saw a movie the other day, and I ended up sobbing really loudly in the theater, even though I tried not to, and I'm sure it must have annoyed other people! And I'm going to go and see the movie again, and I don't know if I'll cry again or not, but if I end up crying, I don't want to be loud, and bother people. ^^;

Thank you for your concern! I'm sorry it seemed so sad. :(

ATWYR. Oh! I was being dim in not seeing that possibility. But I'm so glad it's a practical problem, OP :)

I'm a quiet crier, and the only thing I can think is that my mouth tends to stay firmly shut when I cry? I instictively clamp my teeth closed when I cry - always have done. Maybe that's something to try?

Another trick for removing yourself from the emotion of a movie sometimes is to imagine where the boom-mike is in a given shot. That can throw you out of the movie entirely, though.

First of all, *hugs*. I sure hope things get better soon and you don't have to cry anymore.

I try holding my breath, it makes crying very quiet, but you have to be careful to breath slowly when you need it... if not you end up gasping for air and crying harder (and louder)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Just read your other answer, I'm glad to have misunderstood about the crying reasons :)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really sorry about that! I'm glad I could clear up the misunderstanding, though. <3

And I'll keep that in mind, thank you so much! This was the first time I've ever cried at a movie, and I was really awkward, and I felt so bad, so this is all helpful information. <3

... I don't know.

I only make noise crying when I want to be heard.

I KNEW IT

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I learnt, from watching Toy Story 3 while surrounded by apathetic eleven year olds who DIDN'T UNDERSTAND MY PAIN, that it's a matter of breath control. Low, long breaths to keep control and get air into the lungs, otherwise I get really high-pitched and start to hiccup.
For tears- tilt head back and blink alot, and trying swallowing several times.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Try taking slow, deep breaths when you feel tears welling up. It also helps me to stare straight ahead and blink only very slowly.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what to tell you, because when I cry it's always quiet apart from some sniffling. I usually bite my lower lip and cover my mouth + nose with my hands.

I don't recommend it, but when I was a kid, and someone was hurting me, and it would just make it more embarrassing to cry, I held my breath. If you're not breathing, you're not sobbing.

I'd also dig my nails into my palms or bite the inside of my mouth to calm down, but ymmv on whether that helps.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
breathing hard out your nose instead of making any noise. whimpering. you want to vocalise, so just make your vocalisations the quiet kind.

or shove a pillow over your head.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Breathe out through the nose. Blow your nose a lot. Your head will probably hurt a lot. If I try to cry quietly my head hurts, so I succumb and cry really loudly. I have to screw my face up all ugly, too.

Best of luck with crying in the theatres! It's tricky to cry silently, but not impossible.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
The quietest I could be was with lots of sniffling. So I dunno.... Pretend you're sick? Haha. I have no useful advice, sorry :(

Okay. You're going to need a really thick pillow.

First, place the pillow on the bed.

Adopt a prone position with your face over the pillow.

Now, press your face into that pillow. Press it hard. Press it as if you want to kiss the ground. Imagine the invisible hand of fate--all the horrible shit, all those people who said something mean about you on tumblr--pressing you down into that mattress like a bug.

Now, hopefully this will keep you quiet. You'll also probably pass out. So less time will be spent sad! You're welcome.

They were...they were just asking how to keep from crying during a movie in a theater.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Push your tongue against the roof of your mouth really hard between deep breaths.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually pretty easy. Just breathe through your mouth without sound. Close your eyes and let the tears drop out. Don't sniff if you can help it. Make sure you have napkins or something the next time you go to see a movie.

After a while you'll get to do it without opening your mouth.

/has cried a lot.
