Doctor Who!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So... I've just discovered I actually like Doctor Who... Apparently the first time I tried watching - back when it first aired - I thought it was too silly/obnoxious and stopped part way through the first series of 10's run. But it's on Netflix and I started watching this week and now I'm basically mainlining the whole thing. And I have a four day weekend to watch more! I guess now I'm able to deal with more silliness? Who knows. Though I do find 10 more obnoxious than 9 was... and I've seen the threads here about 10's exit being over the top melodramatic (maybe I'll fast forward through that). I wonder how I'll feel about 11?

I also find 10 more obnoxious than 9, and I love 11. Though, I find a lot of the 10 episodes stronger (as episodes) than I do 9 or 11 episodes, for different reasons: 9 episodes were the show still finding it's rhythm, although there are some standouts, and 11 episodes are just...a mess.

I didn't finish watching 10's death episode, because I heard it was long and drawn out. By that time, I was more than ready for 10 to leave.

I wish 9 was on more than one season, it really hurt when he died. I still miss him. 10 bugged me at first, then by Catherine Tate's season he really grew on me. I won't bore you with my Donna feelings, but her ending bothered me so much more than losing 10.

11 gets mixed reviews, I liked him in season 5, but tbh, I'm getting sick of him. I like Matt Smith as 11, but well Moffat happened, which is a rant for another say.

I was 9 had stayed for more than one season too... he was fun! 10 is too much grandstanding and "look at me! I'm awesome!" while 9 was usually more subtle.

I've read all the spoilers (and rants) about Donna (most of them from here actually) and in fact I'm pretty sure I accidentally watched the last scenes of her last episode - when the doctor brings her home in the end - one day randomly when flipping channels. But we'll see what I think when I actually watch it properly.

DOOOOOONNNNAAAAAAAAAAAA

You can bore me with your feelings! I have many Donna feelings. I thought she had the most tragic ending of any character on the show so far. ;__;

A rec?

I don't know if it'll make you feel worse or better, but I'm gonna rec this nice little fix-it fic for Donna's ending that isn't too shiny and perfect to be believable, and which can easily slip right into canon without changing anything that happened onscreen:

"Donna's Choice" (http://www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=38702)

Finding that "you know, I actually dgaf how silly this is, it's AWESOME anyhow" state of mind is kind of an essential point for people to hit when watching Doctor Who. ;) I'm glad you found something you enjoy!

As for 11: well, I love both 10 and 11 pretty much equally (though I'm a tiny bit more emotionally invested in 10 because I knew the character longer), but I've found that several people I know in the fandom who found 10 obnoxious or irritating really liked 11 and thought his personality was a great change of pace.

If you're fishing for opinions:

11's intro episode is one of my favorite episodes and one of the most effective character-intro episodes ever.

Season 5 was excellent overall with no rage-inducing plot points or massive letdowns, but rather uneven from episode to episode.

Season 6 (and 7 so far) are kinda terrible, but they've got some good individual episodes and moments.

"you know, I actually dgaf how silly this is, it's AWESOME anyhow"</I. That's exactly how it went! Well, that plus my brother and new sister-in-law are fans and I figured it was about damn time I gave it another shot. I was kind of fishing for opinions. I'm looking forward to 11 now. :) Just gotta get through the rest of 10's episodes.

I really liked Ten at first, but by the time I was finished with his run I was really annoyed with him, and Eleven was like a big breath of fresh air after that. Much more muted angst, much more level-headed (even if he is a bit more batty) and much, much less self-centered (still arrogant...but every single Doctor is arrogant, even Five). Eleven's my favorite of the New Who Doctors, although my favorite Doctors in general are Two and Seven.

Of course, starting with season 6 his episodes unfortunately devolved into a complete mess of a pointless, idiotic storyline that few people other than Moffat gave two shits about (terrible misuse of a charming character much more suited to low-key stuff, and a complete waste of two companions who had great potential), but the character still has great moments, especially in the filler episodes.

10's exit was over-the-top melodramatic, but his exit episodes (a two-parter) were SO incredibly cracky and insane and OTT and ludicrously epic that you might find them extremely entertaining if you kind of numb your emotions and try to view it as Ten just having an unfortunately-timed really shitty day instead of something deep and meaningful about his character.

The gazillions of Masters and Rassilon are enough to make the episodes worth it. And then on top of that there is the perfection that is Wilf.

And don't forget Eleven coming into being and deflating Ten's angst bubble right at the end! XD

Anon who started the thread - it might be worth it just for that. ;)
