That is the problem - Tumblrites assume that identifying as 'bisexual' signifies that someone is hung up on a gender binary, when really, 99% of the time it just means you came out before 2005. When in reality, the 'bi' in bisexual is an orientational binary, not a gender binary - it means 'both homosexual and heterosexual', not 'interested in both men and women'. Which is kinda more relevant to the lived experience of bi people, imx - being partly in each world.

This is exactly why "bisexual" works better than "pansexual" for me. (Well, actually, usually I just say "byke"...) It's not that I only like people of specific genders, it's that my experience has been one of moving between worlds.

I didn't know that. That's actually really interesting. :D I still think it's silly to get your underthings in a bunch over how someone else chooses to label their own orientation, though.

Yeah, I have nothing against people identifying as pansexual. But I hate how some people make generalization that if you're bisexual, you're either upholding the gender binary, or you're literally saying you're only attracted to two genders. Yes, I'm sure some bisexual people are attracted only to people who identify as either male or female. But I don't feel like identifying as bi precludes me from finding non-binary identified people attractive. I think as far as labels go, "bisexual" works fine for me.

Oh my fucking God, come on. They are not going to tell me, as a bisexual, what I SHOULD be referring to myself as in order for my sexuality to be politically correct. That is so much more offensive than the word itself.

I don't think that's a wholly fair description of what they're doing - rather than telling people not to identify as bi, instead, they've redefined bi to mean something other than what the bi community has been using it for for the last several decades (seriously, how many bi-identified adults picked that word specifically due to not being ever attracted to nonbinary people? the hell?) So it's appropriation and erasure of our community, rather than straight-up renaming us en masse.

Either way, I don't really think that these people should have the power to shame an entire community into renaming themselves so that THEY can feel better about OUR sexuality.

I always thought bisexual made sense because gender isn't really a part of sexual attraction for most people? I mean, usually you're either attracted to girl parts or guy parts or both, right? So I don't see how gender plays into sexual orientation, unless I'm totally missing something.

Huh, I never thought of that before. Clearly it's intersex people with ambiguous genitalia who we bisexuals are persecuting, not genderqueer people.
