Well, I'll be damned. I got next to nothing out of that film, but I guess slashers gotta slash.

Gandalf/Galadriel makes a surprising amount of sense, but isn't she married?

Yes, she's married to Celeborn (who is pretty foxy himself). I don't think anyone addresses that though. (Not unusual for fandom.)

Maybe they're in an open relationship. You live for millennia, you grow more understanding of the occasional fling.

I don't know I'm just making shit up here.

I could easily imagine someone writing that. Someone probably has actually, I just haven't run across it yet.

Go dig through some of the elfslash that came out back into the LotR days and you'll probably find some handwaving there for extra-marital relationships (and threesomes with the aplicable wife - I recall at least one fic where Elrond and Celebrian dragged Erestor off with them, and one memorable Aragorn/Boromir fic where Arwen quite happily accepted her husband's relationship with a resurrected Boromir with a grin and a question to Faramir of where to find some grapes and buttermilk (she was having pregnancy cravings)).

In fanfic EVERYTHING goes. (And fandom really loves multishipping, heh.)

The Aragorn/Boromir one sounds hilarious but...I'd kinda rather Boromir stay dead. (I love him but...he had such a great death scene!)

That particular fic was actually a dear favourite of my early LotR days. I think it was titled something like "The River's Gift" and it had that some spirit that inhabited the Anduin could see the spot where Aragorn kissed Boromir on the forehead and thought something special of it, so returned Boromir to life.

I think I liked it because one: it was my pairing at the time (my tastes drifted into elfslash later), two it had that scene I mentioned where Arwen was fine about it, and three: it had some really good porn.

I would never be able to find it now, I don't even have any of my old LotR bookmarks anymore! (Not in the least because when I changed fandom after LotR, I also changed my primary journal, adopting what was a sockpuppet/RP journal as my normal LJ.)

The explanation for Boromir's resurrection doesn't sound too bad. Not considering the unrealistic fantasy elements that went into Tolkien's writing itself. lol.

Can't go wrong with good porn!

I don't have mine, either. I recently found a rec list for Legolas/Gimli (which I adored) and went to reread some old fic, but several were either moved or gone. I imagine that's the case with a lot of LOTR fic, which sucks but is not at all surprising.

I am a bit shy of going back to some of my favourites from back then. Some time a year or so ago I dug out one such favourite that I'd saved and re-read it to find the fic was chock full of issues of questionable consent and almost no questioning at all about potential issues of consent (it was a bond-or-die senario).
I think I must have read it fairly soon after a memorable FF8 fic I had huge issues about the unacknowledged dub-con in it that the LotR fic just hit too many sore spots for my liking.

It did show me however that my tolerance for fic has changed over the years and I cannot trust that I would like the fics now that I like back in my early fandom days.

Now I'd rather just forge ahead with Hobbit/Dwarf shenanigans, Durincest, and hope this doesn't totally steal my attention away from the Winchester brothers and their angel.
elaminator: (The Hobbit: Bilbo)

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-12-31 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yea, I know how you feel. Most of my old favorites I can still enjoy but once in a while I'll think, "What the hell did I see in this? How was I okay with that?"

IDK how old you were back then, but when I think of my age I feel a bit better about some of the questionable things I read. Plus...it's fandom, some people don't consider you a part of fandom until you've read a few questionable things.

It did show me however that my tolerance for fic has changed over the years and I cannot trust that I would like the fics now that I like back in my early fandom days.

That's pretty common, I think. Tastes change and as we get older so does our understanding of issues we might've not fully understood in the past.

lol, even if it does, if you like SPN that much I'm sure your attention will eventually shift back to that. Right now I'm enjoying Bilbo/Thorin and in the future will read some Kili/Fili.

Hmm... 2004, I would have been 26. I'd been online for around 3 and a half years at that point.

I'm also very much in support of Thorin/Bilbo and Fili/Kili, with a side order of Thorin with one or both of his nephews. Right now I'm combing the Hobbit kink meme for the results it's come up with so far. I've seen some good stuff.

I do think that once the mid-season hiatus is over my SPN interest will pick up a bit more, unless a couple of writers of certain epics start posting again or I see some good Michael/Dean fics.
