Gandalf knew the One Ring was important, was lost, and was being searched for, and he knew that the ring Bilbo found was important, even if he wasn't 100 percent sure it was the One Ring.

It talks about it in this article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/seth-abramson/dislike-peter-jacksons-em_b_2342591.html?ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009

There's a timeline and everything.

That article and it's sequel are fascinating reading, even for someone who vaguely recalls that there were other events going on at the time of the Hobbit events.

Aren't they? I read The Hobbit and 'Fellowship' and The Silmarillion and, of course, just could *not* keep all the masses of names and events and history straight in my head, so the timeline and such were very helpful.

I used to be a wealth of information on this stuff back in the day, but since being lured out of the LotR fandom by Cloud Strife's spiky hair, I've forgotten many of the details, not mention back then I concentrated more on the elves and the Silmarillion details than the Hobbit events. It's nice to get a refresher on it.

I have a horrible memory and even stuff that is super-favorite, i have a hard time keeping straight. I'm not one of those super-intense Tolkein fans who knows every little detail, and never will be.

I leave that for my other friends, heh, who i question at will.

I am however a major fangirl of Wikipedia, whioch is a gem for finding stuff I've forgotten. If not them, then I can go look up the LotR wiki I found earlier.

For all its faults, Wiki *is* handy for things like that. :)
