Eddie Redmayne actually makes Marius fairly magnetic, but no matter how hard Amanda Seyfried tries, it's clinically proven to be impossible to make adult!Cosette interesting. Maybe at the very end when (spoiler) dies, but that's about it.

Even in the book the only time she manages to be somewhat compelling is the spoilery moment you mentioned.
