The Girl in the Fireplace episode, right? (about Versailles)
I love this one.

I was curious, so I wikipedia-ed the places the Doctor went to in our country (hello, fellow citizen! Happy new year!):

- Paris, 1st Doctor, about the massacre of St Bartholomew (sadly, the episode was lost)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Massacre_of_St_Bartholomew%27s_Eve

- Paris/Versailles, 10th Doctor, The Girl in the Fireplace.

- Paris, 1st Doctor, during the Terror (gee, they sure knew how to pick the right time to land!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Reign_of_Terror_(Doctor_Who)

- Paris, Arles, 11th Doctor, Vincent and the Doctor

Honorable mentions:

- Not in the country but famous figures from the country:
Louis Pasteur, 7th Doctor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_and_the_Rani

Cyrano de Bergerac, D'Artagnan, 2nd Doctor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mind_Robber

- Expanded Universe:
Paris, 5th Doctor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Church_and_the_Crown

Paris, 1st Doctor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_in_the_Velvet_Mask

Mentions of Talleyrand and Napoléon, 2nd Doctor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Game_(Doctor_Who)

Paris, 4th Doctor
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon_Quest#The_Demon_of_Paris

So that's much more than I thought! Mainly Old Who, but still, much more than other countries. Very Paris-centered though.

Actually, the First Doctor was thrilled to land during the Terror. He loved the Revolution historically, said it was one of his favorite periods. He totally lives it up during that serial, too, that young punk.

Okay, that makes me actually want to watch it. *g* I'd planned to skip it because British depictions of the French Revolution usually just irritate me, but yesssss, if One is a Revolution fanboy then it sounds like they're getting the exact things right that I feared they'd get wrong. As in, whatever your personal opinions are on the subject, if you dump the Doctor in the middle of the Revolution and expect any reaction other than his eyes lighting up with glee, then cultural/historical animosity has clearly gotten in the way of good characterization.

Oh man. OH. MAN. It's beautiful. I will admit it's not my historical period so I can't say NAILED IT! but without giving too many spoilers, the Doctor punks officials of the Terror, Barbara gets a mysterious love interest (and it's done really well and classily, actually), they play with the British reaction to the Terror (SPIES!). This was the serial that cemented me as a fan of the First Doctor tbh.

Really? Aww, I really should get around to watch the first seasons of Doctor Who... Thanks for the heads-up!

Fancy meeting you here... :D

(Les Misérables anon from the other day, hi!)

I love how the Doctor is always so excited when he meets a famous historical figure. Nine gushing over Dickens never fails to make me smile.
