Elrond/Elros is rich with angst over the whole issue of one brother choosing to be an elf and one choosing to be a Man. Resurrection fics also have the joys of thousands of years of separation (well, for Elrond - maybe adjusting to the fact that Elrond hasn't seen him for thousands of years for Elros).

Seeing as I'm down with Thorin/Bilbo (which is riddled with angst), I could probably get behind Elrond/Elros. Maybe I'll read some.

One of my favourite things so far for Thorin/Bilbo is resurrection fics or Valinor fics. The latter however gives me the near-tears - it's probably the idea that Bilbo has to spend over 60 years mourning Thorin.

Ugh, those are particularly rough. Rough but beautiful; I love when people can pull off heartbreak while still making it sweet. (Which is always how I feel when I think of Bilbo saying he always wanted to see Mirkwood again and the Misty Mountains. Then writes in the end of his book, “And he lived happily ever after, to the end of his days." He never got married either...

Something now makes me think of that as a polite fiction for the sake of readers, though I have read a few shippy fics that have that there was quite a few things Bilbo left out of his writing, mainly as concerns his deeper relationship with one particular dwarf (I've seen this in both Thorin/Bilbo and Kili/Bilbo).

Haha, yea, I don't actually believe that's what those lines/him not being married was meant to imply, it's just a fun thing to fit into your headcanon if you ship Thorin/Bilbo. Gandalf thought Bilbo never married because he didn't want to be 'tied down', and had only enough room in his heart for adventure, which is a good theory, and one that I think is sufficient for the book.

Nah, I mean it's a polite fiction in those shippy fics.

In canon I take it at face value and Bilbo just never felt the need to get married, or met the right girl, or after becoming a Hobbit of Adventure never quite felt he fit into Hobbit life quite right again.

I also think that's why Frodo never married (his yearly illness from the Morgul blade wound aside), but that Sam retained enough "normal Hobbit" that he could go on and marry and have children.

That sounds about right! Sam definitely wasn't affected in the same way Frodo was, for sure.

For all the hardship they both went through, Frodo was the only one to go through long-term mental hardship, since he was carrying the Ring. Sam carried it for... at most a couple of hours? Not much effect on him at all.
