I can totally relate. Local BBSes served much the same purpose for me back in the mid-90s - I have no idea how socially inept I would still be by this time, or if I ever would have been able to hold down a job (or even get past an interview) if text-only online communication hadn't helped me figure out how to socialize in a safe environment that neutralized some of my problems with in-person communication. Hooray for online geek culture! Hopefully you'll also find that your offline communicating gets better with the experience you get online. =)

^same here. I was always fairly isolated IRL and it was gamer BBSes that got me used to being liked socially.

USENET did this for me. Didn't improve my social skills one bit, but yeah, my self-esteem certainly shot through the roof.

That's cool! I'm glad you feel comfortable and welcome. :) And maybe having good experiences in online fandom will help you feel more confident about interacting with people offline (even though it might never be as easy as it is online).

I kinda want to ask what fandoms you belong to, because I love meta and analysis, and the fans in my fandoms aren't into that stuff. (Not that I have a problem with FEELS, but I want some thinks as well...)
