He was a commercial sell-out who painted only happy things and had the nerve not to suffer for his art.

He was also apparently an unfortunate drunk (allegedly pissing on figures outside the Disneyland hotel: http://articles.latimes.com/2006/mar/05/business/fi-kinkade5) and quite possibly a really skeevy businessman (http://defiantheart.deviantart.com/journal/Thomas-Kinkade-FBI-Investigation-214143881 -- sorry it's a DeviantArt link but the link it's copied from is acting up).

I didn't dislike him until I heard about his franchise operation. I don't remember the specifics -- I think the terms kept changing to put more risk on the franchisees while taking away their profit margin? I mostly just remember I was appalled when I read about it.

LOL, like akacat said, the guy was a scumbag into scamming well-meaning fans who thought that they were helping out a fellow Christian into buying in galleries/stores of his stuff while his company was running an operation that would sell his shit as a much cheaper price, putting the galleries/stores in the red because they couldn't compete with the prices.

The guy himself was an awful human being, he sexually assaulted a woman at a signing as well.
