Looking for good self-taught artists

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I can't think of a single good fanartist in any of my fandoms who hasn't gone to an art school. As a beginner, who could never afford classes, it's very disheartening. I know that as a self-taught wannabe "artist" I'm unlikely to ever match the skills of a person with formal education, but I was hoping that I might eventually reach the point where my pictures would stop looking blatantly amateurish.

I'd be immensely grateful if someone could help me find a good self-taught artist whose works don't appear inexperienced, so I can have a glimmer of hope for improvement.

Well, lots of anime character designers were self-taught. I was really shocked to discover that Nobuteru Yuki was self-taught. His artwork displays an amazing understanding of human anatomy and it's incredibly detailed.

I know this isn't exactly what you were asking for, but just drawing the human figure over and over again will be enough to improve your artwork greatly. That's essentially what you have to do to draw good work and you don't necessarily have to take art classes to be decent at it.

The artist of Head Trip (http://headtrip.keenspot.com/) is self-taught, I believe.
