(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 03:36 am (UTC)(link)I think either roughly works in this context, but bad rap isn't necessarily better - to me it implies someone has been inaccurately accused convicted of a particular crime (metaphorically or not). Hufflepuff's reputation isn't linked to a particular (inaccurately perceived) action though - it is rather connected with an idea of its traits being ineffectual, weak, unwanted. As such it is a 'bad' reputation because it is unfavourable. (I also disagree with your definition of bad reputation as being 'as a direct result of something that they've done or other questionable behaviour.' It certainly can be, but someone's reputation is just what other's think of them, and is not inherently connected with a particular cause - unlike 'bad rap'.)
