Re: KPOP RECS

(Anonymous) 2013-01-02 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not that into KPop anymore, so I probably shouldn't be the one giving reccs, but I do like squeeing about it every now and then. I can't really pick a favorite, but a good place to start is Big Bang. I made fun of them a lot at first, but their music really grew onto me and when you get past the idea that the whole "we're hard gangsta wannabes" is just an image thing, you might end up really liking them. I like TOP because he's a weirdo guy who can't dance and isn't that into being an idol yet he's in a really popular group. I always sing "Number 1" at karaoke, and you can never, ever, go wrong with "Lies". And if you're into scandals, they youngest in the group, Seungri, recently was involved in a scandal where a chick he slept with spilled the beans about the whole thing. My friend, who's actually still involved with the fandom, was telling me all about it. And Big Bang does have a tendency to be involved with scandals now and again.

Most of my friends got into KPop through Super Junior, although they're a bit old now, so maybe I'm better off reccing like...SHINee or B2ST or 2PM.
Here's Suju's "Sexy, Free & Single" mv released in 2012:

But I personally liked "Sorry Sorry" a lot more (dance version because I love the way they dance!):

Suju's had their fair share of drama as well (which group hasn't, geez), and they're from SM Entertainment and SM is a complicated label. They've had a lot of drama concerning the popular groups and artists they've signed/fired/lost.

SHINee! Another SM product. I've never been a big fan, I actually got into their music just a couple years ago, so I don't know a lot about them, aside from my KPop fandom friends making a lot of jokes about them (Jonghyun has to sing to everything; Key is fabulously gay; Taemin is a the youngest and always has ugly hair weaves yet he's allegedly a sex machine with the ladies; Onew is a fail leader; Minho has a funny chin from all the plastic surgery). They have a distinct style (colorful!), and they're good dancers. Their music can be pretty addicting.
Have fun with "Lucifer" (which my friends and I had so much comedy material for, it was pretty awesome; the song is stupid but OMGAH I LOVE IT):

B2ST...OK now we're hitting territory I know little to nothing about, aside from the fact that my friends went gaga over them. They're also not from SM (you can really tell when a group or artist isn't from SM). So here's "Beautiful Night":

I would get into TVXQ/DBSK but...there's a lot of history to cover and I had my own journey with them (from a fandom level). I don't follow TVXQ/DBSK or JYJ anymore, but they're all still pretty popular. I'll give you some of my favorite DBSK songs:
"O":

"Miduhyo":

And "Tri-Angle" actually still holds up for me:

And here's a bit of pimping from my selfish end, I freaking love, love, love Supernova (or Choshinsung), but they're not really popular as a KPop group (but they are very successful in JPop so I hope they'll last). I've been writing too much about stupid stuff so I'll just give you probably their best song which was a collab with a popular girl group called T-Ara "TTL (Time to Love)":
http://youtu.be/NFFgRRLInD4

*"TTL" was just a collab between some of the girls from T-Ara and the three rappers from Supernova*

"TTL2" (where you see both groups with all their members in the mv):

I also have a tender heart for NU'EST, who is probably a more relevant group than Supernova. LOL
I love "Action":

I guess I can drop a good word on Teen Top since my fandom BFF loves them.
"No More Perfume On You" which I like because the song is about a jerkass boyfriend who tells his second girlfriend to not wear perfume because his first girlfriend might get suspicious if she smells another woman's scent on him. I like it because it's not a simple "I love you" song. LOL

As for girl groups, 2NE1 is awesome!
"I Am The Best":
http://youtu.be/j7_lSP8Vc3o

"Fire":

SNSD (or Girls Generation), don't care what the fans say, I like them! I think the anti hate is less severe now, but I'm not sure since I'm that that active anymore. I believe they're the girl equivalent of Suju (they're both signed onto, yep, SM).
"Gee" which was super popular when it was first released:

If you see anything you like, just look them up on Tumblr. You can also visit Omona They Didn't:

From my experience, which was a few years ago, I like following the KPop stuff from a humorous perspective more since the straight up love is so...frigid and serious and hateful. Whereas from a humorous perspective, it's filled with a lot of in joking and realizing how silly KPop is but still loving it.

I also recc watching "Kisung85" videos where they have parody lyrics to popular KPop songs. They aren't active anymore, I don't think, but their "Lies" and "1,2,3,3 Back" parodies are classics. I actually discovered A'ST1 from the "1,2,3,4 Back" parody video, which I don't know if I should be happy about or not, because they weren't a popular group and were disbanded a few years ago, which had me really upset because they were the group I liked most.

I won't get into the old stuff (HOT, Shinhwa, SES, etc) because this post is long enough. Sorry for the rant.

Oh thank you so much! This is amazing!

You're welcome! Again, really sorry if it went on a bit. I have a habit of rambling. I hope you find artists you like enough to follow. KPop is shallow, but I can't lie about how addictive the music can be. And if you end up watching behind the scenes videos or groups/artists on variety shows, it makes you like them even more.
