Harry Potter is like the training wheels to fandom ("I want to be a witch/wizard too! I'll be in X House, and I'll do magic and have a familiar and...! :3")

in that way it is similar to Homestuck and MLP:FiM: it already has the right templates to create your own OC and slap it into that universe right away
