persecution complex! yes, those are the exact words i was looking for with all my tl;dr roundabout rambling. since nerds (is that even the right word) tend to get picked on by society, they defend themselves by attacking the "mainstream" (is that even the right word either). and as a further extension, it can be a defence mechanism so that doesn't hurt so much when those people insult them because they kind of look down on those people.

(i'm on-and-off in a sports fandom so i get what you mean lol. there's a divide between different types of sports fans though. and also, good luck with your thesis! don't let it eat you.)

ah, yes! GSF1 is pretty much exactly what we were talking about.

and omg, this is awesome. i'm working on a paper now so i can't read the whole thing, but i'm definitely reading the first two and bookmarking the rest for later.

definitely. the "geek tribe" thing is extremely true. i recall very well practically forming a wolf pack and hissing at outsiders tbh.
