That's certainly how it's worked out for me. When I was younger I hardly left the house due to health problems. Getting the internet gave me a social group, romantic relationships and eventually the guy who moved here to be with me and who I'm still with now. In the last few years I've branched out a lot, got more active outside the house, and made more local friends. But that doesn't mean I've stopped trying to meet new people online, or that my friends online are somehow "less real" than the friends living nearby. I mean, why would people stop mattering to me? And even when I have lots of social opportunities offline, I only have so much time and energy and going to parties and pubs and stuff can be expensive.

I feel like this online friends/offline friends divide is going to be one of those things people look back at as ridiculous in a few decades.
