It remains to be seen whether or not he was saying that to manipulate Dirk or not, but I think there was a very large kernel of truth in his words. So I felt really bad for him while also having uneasy stomach flops about what was going to happen next.

Annnd then ARquisprite happened and now everything is hilarious.

I think you are supposed to feel bad for them. Even though he's "not human," part of homestuck is questioning where does humanity* being and end; aradiabot and lil hal are good examples of this, because they aren't human/troll, right? Or are they? Homestuck pushes these boundaries to make people think and question things, like "is there more to being human/alive than just flesh and blood?"

I do not trust Lil' Hal one bit, but that part had me feel super uncomfortable too, and felt both relief and apprehension when Dirk prototyped him. Andrew Hussie is truly a marvelous writer to make you doubt your own perceptions in just a few sentences...

That whole fucking scene, man.

I hated that fucking AI. I wanted Dirk to snap him in half and chuck the pieces off the roof. But then he started begging.

And even though I knew it was probably just Hal-type appealing to the human consciousness, it still fucking worked.

that whole scene kind of reminded me of the bit in the 2001 book where dave reflects on the fact that he's about to kill the only other conscious being on the ship, even though, yeah, that conscious being had just murdered everyone else
