I hate that phrase with a vengeance.

Check your vengeance.

I've never understood it tbh. Check my privilege? Checked, and it's awesome. Why would anyone who has privilege shut up because of it or fight to eliminate it.

it benefits the holder

or fight to eliminate it.

Justice?

Don't get me wrong, I think lots of SJWs are parodies of themselves.

But there are lots of people who see injustice and are willing to fight it even if it benefits them. They're called good people, or at least people who are trying to be good.

See I think people get defensive about "check your privilege" because, well, shouldn't we be working to give other people, the same level of privilege? Shouldn't we all strive to gain an equal privilege in society?

If we aim to take this nebulous "privilege" away, then I think that's where people get confused. I see with with my white friends, to whom this is almost exclusively directed towards, and I'd get defensive as well, if it were me.

...but striving to build a society where everyone starts on an equal footing WOULD take away people's privilege.

Even if the people toward the top don't lose anything, bringing others up by providing them with the same advantages they enjoy is still removing those things as an advantage. And the kind of people who care about status and/or having advantages over others won't like that.

Some people have empathy, or want to try a little to make their community and world a more equal and accepting place by humbling their inherent privilege. I don't get it either.

The problem is that "check your privilege" isn't being used to promote equality, at all.

I think the idea behind the phrase is more "recognise you have privilege because it doesn't look like you realise it". Though by now it's really just become one of those catchphrases.

I really hate it and it's been said to me online, what I didn't get at the time was that the person has no idea who I am, and in fact I wrote a reply explaining that the discrimination that had happened to the OP in question had in fact happened to me. I felt so angry at being judged by complete strangers on the internet, just because they didn't like my turn of phrase.

Anyhow in fact I deleted all the justification because I felt it was none of their business. I just pointed out that they didn't know me, and how dare they judge.

I don't think anyone has the right to tell people they are "privileged" You don't know what demons they have, what their life has been like, or is like. It just makes me so angry.
