Self insertion. I haven't seen the movie, but it sounds like this Darcy character has just enough character to establish her as part of the cast, but still enough openness that authors can write themselves into her role, instead of creating an OC for that purpose. And then they can use her as the avatar for doing all these cool friendship things that they would totally do if they were the friend of the avengers.

She's fun and interesting and has plenty of characterization, but she's characterized in a way that makes it really easy for fangirls to project themselves onto her (college student, goofball, fangirl tendencies/swoons over hot guys, cares a little too much about her gadgets).
