I see it as something that has a theoretically useful purpose but has been corrupted by SJWs to the point where you really can't do anything with it anymore. I mean, it's nice to have a shorthand for "that thing you just said is douchey because you're making a joke out of a hardship/oppression that you're not ever likely to experience", but given whom "check your privilege" has become associated with, I think I'll stick to the long-hand version when that needs to be said.

I'd rather stick to the long version myself, it can be said in different ways and is far more prone to compassion, and teaching.

"check your privilege" is just a crass buzzword now, it has no meaning and it just used to shout down any and all disagreeable opinions. hell "check your privilege" is almost a meme now, if it isn't already.

The long version is undeniably more useful and better for generating a conversation, but sometimes when some jerk drops a "Poverty in America means basic cable and having to rent instead of buy"* (for example) response on you, it really is tempting to just be like, "You're an ass and go away." There's something to be said about stepping back from the Internet when you've reached your fool-suffering quota, though, and I think a lot of SJWs need to learn it.

*I grew up no healthcare and struggling to have enough food and heat on in winter poor(in the midwest--in America), so that one always gets me.
