This is op. Can't log on because I am in my kindle. I agree that this isn't seen that often anymore. Nor do I particularly believe that the dominant person is always the top. But I have noticed that the fandoms most likely to use the top/bottom convention are anime and manga fandoms which also use the seme/uke distinctions. Of course,if the use of dominant partner is problematic I will remove it (but keeping top). I have not been in an anime fandom in several years so this may have changed.

I'd say probably stick with top rather than dominant, since that's usually what's being indicated. Less chance of stepping on a bit of a sticky topic that way. I know what you mean about anime and manga fandoms, though, and it is still seems to be prominent there. I haven't been heavily involved in those for a few years, either, but I think that's still the case. A quick check of ff.net or AO3 will probably show if it's still true.
