I think 'religious experience' is also up for personal interpretation. Let's take the Aurora shooting for example. Some people said it was 'the hand of god' that made the killer's gun jam. They take it as 'divine intervention'. The reason why I can never see 'divine intervention' in this is because so many people were killed, even a child, and so many were wounded. The 'all knowing god(s)' decide to make a gun jam instead of 'smiting' him down before he was allowed to go on his killing spree.

For me, as an atheist, I can't ever see any stroke of luck as godly because why would it be? There's a chance a spray of bullets is not going to hit someone, there's a chance someone won't die in an accident, there's a chance a disease will finally be cured. I think it's a push of faith to see something as divine rather than not in chance. I think it's far easier to be able to see something holy in horrible situations than not be able to.
