And can we just generally stop using rape to describe things that aren't, y'know, rape?

I think the OP is either a troll or one of those over-sensitive sjws who cry over every instance of something seeming skeevy if you turn your head nearly upsidedown and squint really hard.

Eh, I think that "mindrape" is a valid way to explain this fiction happenstance, though I don't think it's accurate in this context. Most mindrape I've read/heard of involved someone getting into someone's mind against their will, and messing with their brain/memories/soul/spirit/whatever the story calls for without the consent of the person who's brain it is.

I mean, if we look at "rape" as violation of the body, then the same thing happening to the mind could also be considered a type of "rape".

At least, that's my opinion of it. /shrug

(Though admittedly the word "rape" does get used too often to mean things that aren't rape, like the term "facebook rape". That's just... No.)

Yeah, but there's lots of different violations that still wouldn't be rape.

I'd say that if the mind control is used for a sexual purpose, it's mind rape. Otherwise, it's still not ok, but it's not rape.

I think what "mind rape" is or isn't in fiction depends on the setting that the story is taking place in. Mind control for sexual purposes would be one way to do so, however that would also easily fall under the umbrella of "physical rape".

I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this, though, because I don't think that there has to be a sexual component for something to be considered "mind rape", as long as there is non-consensual force against a person self/mind/soul/whatever is important in the context of the narrative.

It is hard to tell, though, given that we do not have the ability to go into people's minds the same way that happens in fiction, and thus we have nothing to compare it directly to.

In the context I've seen it, it usually refers to beings who have psychic powers and for whom mind touch is an act as intimate as sex--Vulcans, for instance. Therefore entering someone's mind against their will is tantamount to rape, especially if mind touch is a part of intimate or sexual relationships.

I see where you're coming from, though, that rape refers to a specific act and everything else is an analogy ("as bad as rape").

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
True - but I think part of it also should depend on the impact it has on the victim.

For example, using mind control to get sex could fall under mind rape [or even physical rape], but, depending on the means and circumstances, it could also fall under something much closer to Stockholm syndrome, or perhaps 'sex under false pretenses'.

By the same token, I've seen some scenes in fiction that I would defiantly classify as being far closer to rape despite there being no physical context *because* it was a violent invasion of the victims mind, generally while the victim was awake, aware of it and very obviously against it while being hurt by it [and having no control over what the assailant accessed/went through/etc in the mind.]

tl;dr: I agree what happened with Bunny wasn't mind rape [though I would argue that it wasn't right of Jack to do either], but that what is does very depending on circumstances, methods and the impact on the victim.

I'd say what happened was more like giving a cat catnip. He might have drugged Bunnymund a bit, but I'm not even sure Jack is aware that's what he's doing. He equates fun with snow, so it's possible he thinks he's just showing people how to have fun again.

Catnip? That could work!

Not op, but I was also incredibly disturbed by the bunny scene. I like this Jack doesn't know it is magic theory...
