I mean I tend to dislike the genre on TV or in film.

I like humor, and enjoy stand-up comedy.

I'm curious - what makes you dislike the genre? (I can think of quite a few reasons, tbh...)

Several things:

The first is that I find a lot of them just unfunny, and I get bored.

Even if I do find some of it funny, most comedies have the whole "second hand embarrassment thing" going, which I really can't stand.

I dislike the way that a lot of comedies handle relationships, either being over-simplistically easy, or thriving on very stereotypical conflicts. So generally romantic comedies are the ones I'm most weary about. I honestly always thought this was my own personal mental quirk, but I recently heard a woman proclaim basically the exact same thing.

Often I just think that all the characters are horrible people.

For series specifically, there usually isn't really an overarching plot that draws me in. It's all pretty situational. There often isn't a real story. Say, you could watch episode 8 first, and then episode 5, and it wouldn't make much difference. So even if one or two episodes would be okay-ish to watch for me, I wouldn't really be drawn in enough to watch a whole season.

And lastly, just a lot of well-meaning friends who, upon hearing you dislike comedy, try to expose you to what *they* think is good comedy, often creating even more of an aversion.

I hope that helps?

What other reasons could you think of?

ayrt

What other reasons could you think of?

The fact that a lot of characters in modern comedies are horrible people but are not portrayed as being detached from reality is a big one, yeah. Also, a lot of comedies thrive on building up massive stereotypes, which only works if the viewer truly is completely ignorant about the thing being stereotyped. And so, so many comedies are so suffocatingly sexist and/or gender-rigid it drives me up the wall.

I generally much prefer older comedies, like, from back in the black-and-white era, because the characters there were generally portrayed as being extremely outlandish and not to be taken seriously even during their sympathetic moments.
