getting rid of leftover medication (possible tw)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-01-05 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Okay so I have this bottle full of lithium in my house that's like three years old and I keep carrying it with me from place to place even though I switched to lamictal years ago and don't take it anymore. This is because I'm environmentally conscious enough to know that I can't just throw it away or flush it down the toilet without contaminating the water supply with lithium, killing animals, etc.

BUT having it around isn't good because it's sort of like an invitation to commit suicide just sitting around in my medicine cabinet, so I need to get rid of it. I tried taking it to the pharmacy where I get my prescriptions because I thought the pharmacist could take it off my hands but the best thing they have is this envelope (THAT YOU HAVE TO PURCHASE, it should be free if you ask me) that you mail the pills in to who knows where. But it looks like I can't mail stuff like pysch meds or controlled substances so that leaves me back at square one

So does anyone have any tips?

Maybe throw them in a battery/cellphone disposal, or something similar for sensitive substances? I'm not sure if that'll work though...

sounds like you will have to do your own research according to your area, but hopefully something here helps?

Can you bring them to your doctor? I had to do that with leftover pain meds. He threw them in his sharps bin specifically to avoid flushing them, but I don't know how they're disposed of from there.

I see you live in Texas and that's where I live, too. Texas is awful about medication disposal but every county has a bio-waste collection point where you can take them. There *might* be a fee. They also have periodic drives for free medication turn in, usually at area hospitals but sometimes they have reps posted outside busy places a'la Salvation Army collectors. If there isn't a viable option available to you right now, take the medicine to your prescribing doctor and explain the situation. If they're aware of your suicidal ideation and that this dangerous medication is a problem for you, they are required to take it away from you.

Take care and stay safe.
