Obviously there's the kinkmeme (which a lovely Anon linked me to last secret or so) and people are posting fic to AO3, but are there any dedicated LJ or DW fic comms for the Hobbit (or LotR in general) that are active right now?

The places I've been visiting since the premiere here in Europe are AO3, FF.net, Livejournal (hobbitfilmfic.livejournal.com) and the kink meme. There's some shortfic on Tumblr as well (I mostly watch the site for .gifs and art, though). Not surprisingly, the FF.net section is full of self-inserts, just like the typical "10th walker" Mary-Sue stories back in the LOTR days of fandom LOL, so my fave places right now are AO3 and the kink meme, and I must have read 99% of Thilbo fic there is, almost all of the fic with Thorin as a character, and all of Bilbo/Bofur, plus some Kili/Fili. :D

It's why I feel bad for wanting longfic and more angst and a relationship that develops slowly. As a Thilbo fan, I'm already spoiled enough and wanting more makes me sound greedy! *embarrassed*

A03 had like 5 The Hobbit fics when I first did the search (all bookverse at that point), now there are 380+ and, luckily, some diversity has been introduced into the stories since I've posted my secret, but I still feel the majority of Thilbo reads quite similar. ^^; I'm sure that'll change when more fans come into the fandom, though, as others have said!

Thank you so much for the info, OP. You've inspired me to seek out some Hobbit fic. :)

I share your frustration in general with short fics. I'm a very quick reader, and I want something I can sink my teeth into and read for an hour or two instead of fifteen minutes.

Although I think that arguments could be made convincingly for otherwise, I think that most interspecies relationships in Middle Earth would be fraught with cultural misunderstandings and disapproval. I wrote a post here about human/hobbit relationships specifically (http://lunabee34.dreamwidth.org/348369.html), but I think you're right that Bilbo and Thorin would not have an easy go of it in a relationship and that both hobbits and dwarves would disapprove. Of course, Thorin being King makes such a relationship easier on them that it would if he was Just Another Dwarf.

In short, I think the kinds of stories you're hankering for are just the kinds of stories I'd like to read too. LOL
