None of the three in question are my favourites in the movie, but I do really like all of them. Yeah, I think Aidan Turner is attractive, but I like Kili because he has a fucking adorable personality. He's a bit slow to catch on and terrible at insults and fun and overly enthusiastic, and I have a long history of loving that kind of character. I would've loved him no matter what he looked like. And Fili's fantastic too, just as fun as his brother, if somewhat more skeptical and mature. And I've been a fan of Richard Armitage for years, so of course I was going to like him as Thorin, but I also loved Thorin in the book and the Rankin/Bass cartoon where he's, you know, decidedly less hot. For me, I'm quite focused on personality rather than looks, and I think other people are the same, although I know not everyone is. It's always frustrating to have to defend my love for a character just because I happened to connect to someone who was attractive.

And even if people do like these characters for being attractive, I think that's okay. I don't understand why we need to shame people for finding someone hot. I'm reminded of back in the day with Lord of the Rings. I had several friends who got into the movies because they thought Orlando Bloom was hot (and, in one case, Craig Parker). There was a lot of squeeing and oh-god-he's-so-sexy, and while that's not why I was into the movies, it didn't hurt me. And it was nice to be around people enjoying something I loved, even if our reasons were different. And while some of those people did move on, some of them didn't. I ended up having some of the most in depth Tolkien conversations I've ever had with a couple of those girls, something that never would've happened if they hadn't first got into the fandom to flail over some dude's hotness.

That's a wonderful description for Kili, holy crap. Haha. And I agree, as long as the movies kept his personality the same, I would've loved him. (And I have a lot of complicated feelings on Thorin, but I DO love him, so I'm not going to ramble on that. But yea, agreed again.)

For me, I'm quite focused on personality rather than looks, and I think other people are the same, although I know not everyone is.

I won't lie and say that I can't be shallow, but when it comes to characters I care about personality, too. The most beautiful asshole of a character is still an asshole, and their looks aren't going to sway my opinion. Same for gorgeous boring characters. (And every other combination.) The conclusion that people jump to upon seeing that you like an attractive character is unfortunate, because you can like a character for who they are or find something fascinating about them and still find them attractive. (Or, hell, maybe you don't find them attractive at all. I'm sure there are people out there who don't find Kili hot. Everyone has different tastes.)

I don't see what's wrong with it either, for reasons you've already explained. And like you mentioned, just because they got into the fandom or source material for a hot guy doesn't mean they won't come to appreciate it in a way they didn't before, and become a big fan of it on it's own right. Even if they don't...that's one other person you can discuss the material with. Which imo, is always a good thing.
