Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat's not always true. I was a military brat, I spent some time in Japan (Sheltered on an American military base), and when I finally moved stateside my Junior year of high school? I got asked questions like these:

"You lived in Japan? You speak Chinese, right?"

"Japan? Wasn't it weird for you to have the seasons reversed what with living in the southern hemisphere and all?"

Granted, I only got the second question once (Whereas the number of people who assumed I spoke Chinese was staggering), but the point stands. A lot of people don't know a thing about Japan. Like where it's located. Or whether or not it's part of China.
