Who likes the DC Nu52 Relaunch?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I was told that no one likes it. No one. To what extent is this true?

It's a fucking mess. It's more or less a repeat of the early 90s, only instead of necks like tree stumps, we've got stuff like Joker cutting off his own face and Billy Batson, the nicest superhero ever, being a bratty little shit. There's more blood, more tits, what they did to Starfire was a crime (and oh god Selina,) Amanda Waller went from rough-around-the-edges fat black lady to rough-around-the-edges thin black lady, the list goes on.

Honestly I think the only thing worth reading is Animal Man and possibly a few of the Batman comics. Maybe Earth-2, I don't know, I haven't read that one yet -- it's an AU where the "Big Three" get killed off and other superheroes, including a de-aged, now-gay Alan Scott take over.

NAYRT

Wow, this is making me glad I decided not to bother with the reboot. I already knew about the Starfire fiasco, but they messed with Amanda Waller and Captain Marvel too? That's going too fucking far.

I know right? The least they could do is bring back Garth Ennis' Hitman, which was flat out the funniest thing I've read all year. It was vicious, gory (surprisingly so for DC,) hilarious, dramatic, but also very warm and human. I'd go so far to say it's Ennis' best work. Some of his other stuff, like Crossed, is grim and honestly not the sort of thing I'd recommend. Hitman I'd recommend to anyone.

I just don't understand the whole Joker cutting of his face thing. Why? Yes, he's crazy, but it seems so out of character. From the pages of him I've seen, he doesn't really seem... funny. Just a psychopath. It feels like they're going for the gross-out, edgy angle.

They totally are, it's really kind of sad. You should see Scarecrow, too.

I'm hoping this is all a phase and they eventually give up on this nonsense in about five years.

They also completely ruined the Phantom Stranger. He's not only my favorite DC character, he's my favorite fictional character of all time. So I'm really goddamn bitter about what they've done to him.

And the Questions. Both of them, Renee AND Vic Sage.

I've been sitting in a corner reading a select few Batfamily titles and sticking my fingers in my ears pretending nothing changed. Batman and Batwoman have been great, but there's little about them changed by the reboot and the storylines could have been told before the new 52. Nightwing and Batgirl have been okay - I prefer Dick as Nightwing rather than Backup Batman anyway, but as much as Iove Babs, I really, really miss Stephanie Brown. I also miss the Red Robin title.

The one non-Batbook I've followed is Blue Beatle, which I was hoping would be more of a continuation of the one from a few years ago, but nope, it's a reboot that completely fails to recapture the magic and adorableness of the earlier version.

In conclusion, I don't hate it across the board, but with a few exceptions, it's like they took away the very things I loved and replaced them with T&A and nonsense, and that was entirely unnecessary and probably not good for expanding the readership.

I know a few people who are still clinging on by their fingertips to a couple of titles, but most of my friends had to bail.

I tried to stick it as long as I could, because I loved pre-nu52 DC. Sure, it had plenty of problems, but what doesn't? I'm a massive batclan fan, and I've matched up lots of friends who had never read comics before with titles they ended up loving.

By the end of last year it really felt like DC were going out of their way to refuse to let me give them money by destroying everything I'd ever loved about DC. I don't know what their marketing plan is, but it's clearly insane.

They... well, check this (http://dcwomenkickingass.tumblr.com/post/39416667455/worstof2012) post out for a handful of highlights.

I'll just be over here sobbing about Oracle. And the Amazons. And the other batgirls. And Blue Beetle. And The Question. And Amanda Waller. And Peej. And Helena Bertinelli. And Lady Blackhawk. And the Birds of Prey team spirit. And Arsenal. And Mia Dearden. And Lois Lane. And Superman's optimism. And, like, Green Arrow's beard.

I like the Wonder Woman but Blue Beetle and Static were kinda.. well I don't buy them anymore.

I think it would be hard to find someone that likes every book but WW is the only one I find more interesting now than it was before.

I was really digging WW, but I just cannot after what was done to the Amazons.

Sure, there've always been problems with how to tell the Amazons' story. How isolationist are they? How warlike? How technologically advanced? But they were Wondy's support network, her sisters, and her moral roots.

Now they're all murdering, child-stealing, weapon-hungry, man-hating rapists. Good job, DC. *rage*

Sword of Sorcery is a New 52 title I've been enjoying a lot. But beyond that I've been avoiding the New 52 like the plague.
