I think that writers just can't win either way, and people are more content to shout them down, and tell them what they did wrong, then help them to make it right.

No one is helping the writers.

Man, you remind me of that deluge of angry fans calling Russel T. Davies a self-hating gay man for breaking up Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones by killing off half the couple in S3 of Torchwood.
