Is that the kind of thing a writer is likely to get dogpiled on for in *any* fandom, though, much less in The Hobbit, where the friendships between the characters is so foregrounded?

I've never seen anybody rag on anybody else for writing friendship fic.

No, probably not, although my fandom experience has apparently been rather calm so I'll leave the tales of horror to more qualified folks.

Also, shipping nonsexually wouldn't be a friendship fic. It would be a fic where two characters are in a romantic relationship that both of them have agreed, implicitly or explicitly, does not involve sex. There is a difference - romance doesn't have to mean sex, although it does for a lot of people.

Fortunately, I don't have any tales of horror either. My fandom experiences have been pretty much uniformly positive. :)

Holy shit, thank you.
