The difference is who is taking responsibility for their reading habits. If the teen tells everyone they are underage, what they are doing is foisting the responsibility (and consequences) of their reading on the adults. If they lie, they are absolving the adults of responsibility and taking all the consequences themselves.

And there are consequences. We in fandom also live in the real world and have to deal with people who do not share fandom's values. Especially role players, communities, and archives that have porn need to be wary. Being tarnished as a sex offender is no small matter.
