That's part of why I agree that it was a good call to limit most of the cameo's to the beginning of the movie. It would have felt like it was pandering, and probably alienated the parts of the audience who had no clue who the characters were. With how it was done, even if you didn't know the characters you wouldn't be thrown out of the story, and it was a nice bonus for those who did recognize them.

I didn't mind them. I enjoy puns, and while I'm not totally a fan of an 'all candy' landscape it fit with the characters and story.
