job hunting woe

How come every online application asks for a SSN? No, I do NOT want to give that out online, thank you very much.

Because in order to employ you and pay you for your services, they need that number. If it is a secure website, it's no different from writing it on paper and trusting the person behind the desk not to steal your identity.

They ask for it for quick payroll applications and to prove that you're allowed to work in the country. I've seen plenty of interviews that have gone well and then the applicant has turned around and said they don't have a National insurance number.

Uhh they kind of need that to employ you...

There's no issue if it's a secure website. It's the same security principle as using your credit card online.

Ouch, I remember having that problem before I was issued with an SSN when I was first working in America in 2005. (No, you don't need an SSN to work. It's legal to employ someone who's applied for an SSN and has a letter to prove that their application's been filed & is all in order. Getting the actual number can wait a few weeks.)

So it sucks and isn't legal, but as anons said, your SSN is already online. Over a third of all SSNs issued in South Carolina were stolen in a hack last year, ffs. If your bank hasn't leaked your SSN then your state government probably has. There is no point worrying about it.

Where is it illegal? Federally it is perfectly legal and a number must be issued to work for any publicly held corporation or federal government job; the application for a number isn't sufficient.

I started working in America before I was issued with an SSN. I couldn't be paid until after the number was issued, but they were allowed to employ me. (As it happens I think I got the number before the first pay period was over - otherwise, my pay would just have been delayed).

I think it's illegal to request someone's SSN if you're not their employer, and a prospective employer is not the same thing as an employer.

Nayrt

You still need to prove you are legally eligible to work in the country or you can't ecpect people to hire you for any job that isn't informal and temporary. At my job, showing us a passport is enough to prove citizenship and there are other requirements for Canadians and resident aliens (don't ask what they are, it's been too long since it's come up). That's hard to do online, though.

I am a resident alien. It's not hard to do online, you just need your A number (or whatever other kind of work visa number you have). I've never had to show anyone my green card until after they've hired me; instead I do the nice polite dance thing where I make sure I have it with me for interviews and ask if they need to see it, and they always say no. (It's illegal to discriminate against legal permanent residents for employment purposes, so they are way better keeping it at arm's length until they actually hire me).

When you go to apply in person for an SSN, the SSA check then & there that you're eligible to work in the USA. (In my case, they needed to see my J-1 visa and my entry stamp). So their standard letter saying that your SSN is applied for & will be issued is proof, and if I remember correctly the letter states that you're now officially employable for the next few weeks before the card shows up. So yes, not being able to apply for jobs online was a brief but major annoyance for me back then.

I think we're both arguing the same point? I'm saying employers can ask for proof of eligibility to work before they hire you. That proof can take different forms.

No. Employers are not allowed to ask to see employment authorization documents before an individual accepts a job offer. Ever. They do it all the time but it's not legal. As they're not allowed to discriminate between different forms of evidence I also don't think they're allowed to favour an SSN over an SSA form letter saying that you're waiting for an SSN, and either way it's an irritating hurdle placed in front of new immigrants.

More here on the USCIS website if you want to learn more about immigrant rights.
