you do not need to watch an entire series to pick up on a few meme's and in jokes.

Hell, we have secrets on here about how people do that sort of shit for things they actually claim to be in the fandom of. The difference here being OP isn't a firefly fan and doesn't claim to be one, just a scifi fan. In which case some cursory research if they are really curious is all that's necessary.

This. Plus, as other's have mentioned, it's pretty hit or miss as to someone considering it a classic. Yes, there are groups that do [most notably fans who call themselves Brown Coats in real life], but there are also a lot of groups that hate it with a passion, and even more that don't even consider it worth a passing mention.

So, no. They really don't have to watch it for the sake of a few memes.

This, I'm a scifi fan and I go to a scifi club. No-one has ever cared that I'm not a firefly fan. It's not that big a deal. Just because I like scifi doesn't mean I will like or watch every scifi tv show - be it a cult hit, popular or not.

It's my tastes that determine what I watch, not some kind of invisible popculture checklist
