alcohol and sleeping problems

(Anonymous) 2013-01-07 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ever get hungover, or throw up, and I rarely get smashed, but whenever I've had just a little too much to drink, I always have this problem where I fall asleep quickly but wake up in the middle of the night and feel PANICKED. I don't know if it's heart burn or if I've mysteriously woken up in the middle of a panic attack that started in my sleep, but it feels AWFUL and it makes me a little afraid to drink. My chest feels really tight and it hurts, and my heart hurts, and I feel really freaked out (though I can't decide which is the cause and which is the effect). Does this happen to anyone else? What IS this?

You should probably ask a doctor or someone with actual expertise if you have questions for specific symptoms like that.

Similar happens to me, but a little different. No chest discomfort, but I wake up and feel anxiety in my stomach, and nausea, and sometimes I do throw up, but I never know how much is from nausea and how much is from anxiety. I'd second asking a doctor :-/

That sounds less like heartburn (which is, y'know, actually burny because it's acid getting into places it shouldn't be) and more like a panic attack. Other than that, I've got nothing. You probably should ask a doctor about it if you can, but your best bet is to just learn how to regulate your drinking so you don't hit that "too much" point.

Sounds like night terrors to me, and I'm sure it's possible for them to be triggered by alcohol.

I've heard that alcohol can disrupt sleeping patterns, especially in women. I don't know about your particular rection, but not being able to sleep soundly could be contributing.
