I was too busy trying to figure out when it is ok to sacrifice children. Using them as a human transmitter for the greater good if you're the show's hero is ok, but if you're a government official then it becomes evil?

The government officials were more concerned with covering their asses and making sure the voters wouldn't be too hard on them than anything, but their decision was pretty much the only possible one.
