In general I don't tell people when someone else is talking shit about them, but I can see myself ending up in this same situation and I don't think you should blame yourself for how they're handling it. What I would do is distance yourself from them for a while. If they're going to apologize and make an effort to fix it they should make the first move here. If you're the one who tries to make up with them, it's gonna turn into a vicious cycle. I spent years with a couple of toxic friends and I can't count how many times ended up apologizing for things that I felt they should have apologized for. My life improved a lot after I cut them out of it, and I have new friends now.

To be honest the fact that your original post says this has happened before and the fact that you wonder if they're worth it makes me think that they're really not worth it, but that's your call.
