-shrugs- You like what you like. Personally, I find most older classics about as exciting as paint drying, and find steampunk and vampires to be a little over done these days, so I don't tend to read them*.

*Not saying they aren't/can't be good - just after a certain point I've seen it enough I lose interest.

unfortunately, it is also a fairly common belief that "smart" or "educated" people enjoy the old classics. the inverse is that if you don't like the old classics, you aren't really very smart.

which is obviously ridiculous. I like a couple of the classics, but if a book is set in the real world, I want to be able to relate to it. And I can't easily to relate to stories set in the 1800's or earlier. So generally I stick to the classics that are fantastical or science fiction. That and myths; I really love mythology.

Ah, that I actually knew, sadly. I was just surprised that the person I was responding to seemed surprise to see someone else with that opinion.

Same, pretty much. There are some that I actually really *want* to like too. Like, I love the general plot of a lot of Mark Twain's work...But I just *cannot* get into them. Something about the style he uses to write fiction gets a 'CAN'T!' response from my brain. [Which is a little sad since I *love* his autobiography.]

Also myths are love. Always.
